If you’ve had a pool you know how important the balance of the water levels. Since humans are about 70% water the balance of our levels are important as well. The most essential measurement is the pH (Potential of Hydrogen) of our body, which will be acidic or alkaline - kinda like vinegar or milk. Our bodies are designed to be slightly milky, so if it is too vinegary we’ll suffer greatly for it. In the holistic healthcare world a chronically acidic bodily pH is seen as the underlying cause of the majority of disease and illness. The body’s pH is so important that most of the major systems in our body check and balance our pH levels constantly – specifically the respiratory, circulatory, digestive and excretory systems. Nearly all Americans are overly acidic because of our food and environment, so our body sacrifices its long term health to correct the more immediate crisis of acidic pH levels. You are probably sensitive to the temperature of your body and can tell when you are only a degree too hot or cold. You’ll get shivers or sweat in response. Unfortunately, the human body isn’t as good at signaling when the pH level is off, even though it is equally important to your health. There are several symptoms that you should be familiar with, which I’ll discuss shortly. First, we’ll need to understand why we are too acidic. HOW WE BECOME ACIDIC Acidity comes from 7 main causes. 1. Diet is the most important cause. All food creates a residue or “ash” after it is digested, and many times the ash is acidic. These acidic ashes are not always intuitive. Lemons, which you would expect to be acidic, produce the best alkaline ash. Conversely, milk leaves a highly damaging acidic ash. The worst offenders are discussed below. ACIDITY AND HEALTH All 10 trillion cells of our body are slightly alkaline, and must maintain alkalinity in order to function and remain healthy and alive. However, their natural cellular activity creates acid as a byproduct. The excess acid is excreted out of the cell and the body is forced to deal with it. If the acid can’t be neutralized or eliminated from our body our cells will slow down or stop working. On the other hand, if you can maintain an alkaline environment all 10 trillion cells will thrive and you’ll feel great. You’ll have abundant energy, a happier mood and will lose weight easily. Alkaline Benefits and Symptoms of Acidity The benefits of an alkaline body are amazing. Your body carries more oxygen in the blood that can increase energy, speed up your metabolism and lift your mood. Less medical illnesses are experienced and people often look years younger than their age. Your body isn't forced to create excess fat cells to hide the acidic toxins away so weight naturally melts off your body. The best part is its never too late to become alkaline and experience the great things that come along with it. Keeping your alkalinze stores up and acids under control will have you looking and feeling great! I don't believe acidity is the single cause of all medical issues like many holistic practitioners, but it is certainly near the top of the list. While I don't want dwell on the symptoms of acidity, it is important to know the major problems that can occur: Weight Gain– your body needs to store excess acid somewhere out of the way so it doesn’t damage your organs. Fat cells are created as an emergency prison for acid it can’t excrete or neutralize. The more acidic you are the more weight you gain, even if you aren’t overeating. Cellulite is a common type of fat that stores excess toxins like acid. That’s why people can be “skinny fat” with lots of cellulite. They aren’t eating too much, they are overloaded with toxins. Fatigue – your body can’t absorb oxygen and you remain in a constant state of fatigue. It’s like taking ½ breaths of air and feeling woozy your whole life. Acidity also reduces every cell’s ability to produce energy. It’s like running an engine with only 3 spark plugs instead of 4. Cholesterol– acidic particles damage artery walls and cholesterol is used to patch the damage. Aging– acidity is a toxin and damages cells leading to an aging look. Cancer– many experts claim cancer cells can’t grow in a highly oxygenated environment, but thrives in acidic bodies. Since alkalinity increases oxygen absorption the environment of your body kills cancer if alkaline. Bacteria, Viruses, Candida & Mold – much like cancer they thrive in acidic environments. Their excrement is also acidic, so the overgrowth can cause a downward spiral into severe acidity. Milk gets sour when sitting out for the same reason, the overgrowth of bacteria releases acidic toxins as it eats the milk – likewise with the food the bacteria feeds off of in your body. Osteoporosis – your body maintains a very strict alkalinity of your blood or it would cause major damage to your organs. It’s so important your body will sacrifice long term health to deal with the immediate danger. To alkalize the blood your body pulls calcium and magnesium from your bones, making them weak and brittle. After many years this leads to osteoporosis. Your bones are literally being dissolved by the acid in your body. Inflammation & Soreness– in part muscles feel sore after a workout because of excess lactic acid. When you are acidic (from any source) you are doing the same thing to your entire body, making it sore and inflamed. Many people feel it in their back and neck joints. The greater worry may be the “soreness” or inflammation of your internal organ which aren’t as easily felt by your nerve endings. Chronic Disease – acidity interferes with the body’s ability to heal and repair damaged cells. When collected in one area of the body excess acidity can lead to other problems, most notably gout. Malnutrition– the body can’t absorb minerals and nutrients as easily when you are acidic, leading to chronic malnutrition even if you’re eating a healthy diet. ALKALIZING FOODS Ah, the good ‘ol Standard American Diet! Filled with burgers, pasta, sodas and sweets - it’s soooo tasty, yet so horribly bad for us. The typical diet is made of about 80% acid forming foods and contains only 20% alkaline forming foods, exactly opposite of our natural requirements. While we need to eat some acid forming foods the pendulum has swung much too far to that side. We are MASSIVELY out of balance and need to take immediate steps to get our pH balance back in line. About 60% of the volume of your meal should be alkaline foods in order to maintain alkalinity. To correct an already acidic body that won’t be enough of a change at first and an alkalizing supplement in addition to a change in diet.

TIM'S ALKALIZING ROUTINE The solution to a healthy alkaline body isn't just one thing, you need a comprehensive attack. If you followed the LiveLikeTim Diet recommendation in a previous step you're well on your way. Remember, your body is constantly producing acids so you will need to monitor this your whole life. Eventually it will become second nature, but for now focus on incorporating these suggestions into your routine this week to continue the beneficial trend. (Steps #3 and #4 are the only new ones for this week.) 1. Drink lots of water. You'll notice that the suggestions I make in Phase 1 are complimentary. I've organized each step in order of priority, with topics like water, nutrition and diet in the beginning. Each of these major topics have a multitude of benefits you may not even know about! Stick with the program and you'll be correcting several problems at once. |
