Shopping Guide Based on Contamination Levels |
||
The following is an excerpt from the LiveLikeTim Shopping Guide. All fish contain mercury, and many species contain the poisonous chemicals called PCBs. Fish should only be eaten occasionally. The following recommendations are based on contamination levels. Fish have high nutrient values and without contamination I would recommend fish be eaten as a staple of your diet. “Ok in Moderation” means eating 1-3 meals per week at most. “Rarely Ok” limits meals to 1-3 times per month at most. DO NOT EVER EAT FISH FROM THE “AVOID” CATEGORY! You'll notice that large predatory fish are in the Avoid category because mercury bioaccumulates, which means it is passed upwards in the food chain as larger fish eat contaminated smaller fish. The more fish Some experts recommend never eating ANY fish on the list because mercury is such a horrible toxin with severe medical consequences. Taking a chlorella supplement with a fish meal may prevent mercury from entering your blood stream. If you had to choose a “go to” fish try sole, which has significantly lower amounts than most fish. Tilapia is another popular white fish with lower mercury contamination levels, but it is also very high in detrimental omega-9 and low in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. You can still eat tilapia, but it's not the top choice like sole.
