Introduction to Fruits |
||
| **Click Here for the Printable Grocery List** ALL fruits are excellent when eaten raw, if done so according to Tim’s meal plan, which stresses moderation and correct timing of meals. “Best”, “Ok”, and “Limit” recommendations are based primarily on how fast the fruit spikes your blood sugar and how much total sugar is in the fruit (Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load). Nutrient density, including vitamin and antioxidant content, is also taken into account. “Organic”, “Questionable”, and “Non-Organic” recommendations in the General Shopping Guide are based on pesticide contamination. Some fruits absorb pesticides easily or famers load as many as 34 different types of pesticides onto some fruits (as is the case with many apples). The synergistic effects of these pesticides are unknown and untested. Anything ending in “-cide” designed to kill life is certainly not good for you, and mixing a bunch together in your body is worse. **Click Here for the General Shopping Guide** Don’t buy steroid freak fruits. Pick the smallest fruits in the bin to limit portion size, otherwise eating fruits could lead to excess fat storage. Fruit allergies often coincide with pollen allergies, so if you get seasonal allergies you may have fruit allergies. Symptoms are usually mild, and a relatively small percentage of the population has fruit allergies. DRIED Limit or avoid most dried fruits, the nutrients may not be worth the fat storage. People tend to eat more dried fruit than raw fruit at one time, and the sugar content can be out of control. However, some “superfoods” have recently become popular and are only available in dried form. Remember, a berry is a berry. Although the media has hyped acai, goji, mangosteen, and others, the benefits you get from eating locally grown, fresh berries like blueberries, cranberries and blackberries may be better for you. This list is not exhaustive because I recommend eating mostly fresh fruits. Fiber can be obtained by better sources than dried fruit, without spiking your blood sugar. |
